A policy has one job in an NDIS context: to describe what your organisation does, precisely enough that a worker can follow it and an auditor can test it. Policies that fail an audit are rarely badly written — they are usually describing a different organisation. Why templates alone create non-conformities

Downloaded templates are the most common source of avoidable audit findings. The mechanism is straightforward: an auditor reads your policy, then samples records to see whether it was followed. If the policy names a role you do not have, describes a form you do not use, or commits to a timeframe you do not meet, the sample fails — and it fails against a commitment you never needed to make. A policy set that is honest about how you work is easier to defend than one that is aspirational.

What policies does an NDIS provider need?

The set follows your registration groups, because the applicable standards do. Higher-risk supports add more. The question is not how many policies you hold but whether every applicable standard is addressed by one.

Can we use NDIS policy templates?

They are a reasonable starting point and a poor finishing point. Auditors sample records against the policy, so a template describing a process you do not follow creates a non-conformity that would not otherwise exist.

How often should NDIS policies be reviewed?

At least annually, and additionally when the rules change, after an incident or complaint shows a procedure did not work, and when your operations change. The documented review history is itself evidence.
